Review of Kuwait, 21st Session of the Universal Periodic Review: 28 January 2015

Delegation led by: HE Ms Hend Al-Subaih, Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour and Minister of State for Planning and Development

In Kuwait’s opening statements, Her Excellency commented that ‘We are fully aware that human rights are evolving…and the responsibility of the State’. Kuwait noted that its constitution protects against discrimination, and protects freedom of media and expression.

Several States praised Kuwait as a human rights leader in its region. However, several States raised concerns with the issues of: women’s rights, migrant workers rights, the death penalty, and corporal punishment against children.

Australia recommended that Kuwait establish a formal moratorium on the death penalty, with the view of abolishing the death penalty.
